MAIN OBJECTIVES

  • To create awareness among students about child labour and its impact on unemployment
  • To understand the causes and consequences of child labour
  • To acquire knowledge about the laws governing the protection of child labour

Poverty and economic shocks clearly play an important role in determining the market for child labour. In order to focus our attention on child labour and its impact, students of St. Brittoā€™s Academy, Velachery observed the Anti-child labour day on 13th of June 2016. Students of class IX enacted a skit based on the theme ā€œ A child is meant to learn and not to earnā€ and edified the group on how a common man can raise his voice against child labour by knowing the law.

Through her video presentation, Rindya Nelson (IX B) explained the plight of child labourers and compared the life of a child labourer with that of a privileged child who attended school. The Chief Guest for the day, Mr. Ganesan, Senior Advocate, Madras High Court, highlighted the laws governing the protection of Child Labour. He also mentioned the governmentā€™s plan to eradicate child labour. Students also took an oath to eradicate Child labour and help in the development of the country. Thus, the students were able to understand the causes and consequences of child labour, the importance of education in their lives and also got an insight into the laws governing the protection of child labour. Overall, the day had a meaningful impact on the students, teachers and parents who witnessed it.
