“The breakfast of champions is not cereal , it’s the opposition.” by Nick Seitz.
Staying true to the quote by Nick Seitz, ASSET 2016 kicked off to a start at 7 a.m. at the Police Grounds located at St.Thomas Mount, Chennai. The children were eager and ready to sweat it out in spite of the rains playing the spoil sport. After all, they were competing against the best of the best. An astounding 59 schools participated in this two-days’ event. Knock-out Games were held on Day 1 while the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals were held on Day 2. A total of 9 different events were conducted across the Senior and Super-Senior categories. Games included Basketball, Football, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Volleyball.
While Asset’16 was a test of skill and endurance, for the public who had gathered there , it was a test of which game to watch. It was just sheer competence when last five years’ champions in the Basket Ball Sethu Bhaskara School were defeated by P.S.B.B. School. Participation certificates were awarded to all the losing teams on the same day of competition. “Winners, Runners-Up and Best Sportsman awards would be given away during an award function later”, said the Director, Physical Education Department-cum-P.R.O. of the School, Mr. Gokul Raj.
The greatest success of ASSET 2016 was that it had a wide reach all over Chennai and brought students from all types of schools – Matriculation, CBSE, Aided and Corporation on a common platform. On the whole, ASSET 2016 was perfectly planned, organised and executed on the lines of its expectations. It will definitely be a platform utilized by aspiring sports children to enhance their skills and it will definitely pave the way to identify promising athletes and sports persons who can be coached for higher achievements.
