BOUNTY OF LIFE LESSONS FROM THE PLANTER POTS ON THE GRILLS OF THE CORRIDOR!!!
NURTURE THE NATURE
Every opportunity at St. Britto’s Academy is created to relate learning to live according to the vision of Dr. Vimala Rani Britto, the Founder and Correspondent of St. Britto’s Group of Institutions One of the ventures, in line with this, is the growing and nurturing of plants by the students. An eco-initiative that targets a green world, self-sufficiency and sustainability is a welcome move that has ensured participation and involvement from the students and the teachers as well. Each child is entrusted with the responsibility of sowing a seed to grow a plant. The students bring varieties of seeds and herbs, shrubs, medicinal and ornamental plants of their choice to be sown/planted in the planters provided to them. This inculcates a sense of ownership as they label their pots with their name, class and section, water them regularly and monitor their growth. They also understand that the process of farming involves a lot of effort from the farmers. A feeling of respect is obviously infused in their mind for the farmers, taking note of the complexity of the food’s journey from the farm to the fork.
This venture enables the students from a very young age to remain patient, working towards the goal with perseverance when they personally experience that plants take time to grow. Interdependence among different members of the ecosystem is unconsciously internalised by the students. They attain a sense of achievement and feel gratified when they look at their plants maturing. Hence the adage, NATURE IS THE GREATEST TEACHER is substantiated.
How about the thought of garnishing the dishes prepared by our little chefs in the cookery lab coming from these herbs? Sounds great???
